System XFR® pipe and fittings offer a strong, high-performing alternative option for drain-waste-vent (DWV) pipe in high buildings and plenums
System XFR® is the world’s first engineered PVC DWV system rated for high buildings and air plenums, where the National Building Code mandates more stringent flame spread and smoke development requirements.
Suitable for use in combustible and noncombustible environments, System XFR®’s advanced PVC material has a flame spread rating of 25 and smoke developed classification of 50 which permit it to be installed in high buildings and air return plenums in accordance with local codes.
Performance-Driven XFR Pipe System
In addition to its flame and smoke retardant capabilities, System XFR® pipe and fittings deliver all the performance advantages you would expect from thermoplastic piping.
System XFR® has a substantially lower roughness factor compared to metal systems, allowing for overall improved flow. It’s also made with a larger inside diameter which provides a greater cross-sectional area for flow and raises both carrying capacity and flow rates.
Lower Thermal Conductivity Compared to Copper Pipes
System XFR® sweats less than metal pipes due to its excellent insulating properties. As a result, System XFR® pipe and fittings can reduce — and in many cases, eliminate — the need for insulation.
Superior Anti-Flame & Smoke Capabilities
When tested to the CAN/ULC S102.2 Standard, System XFR®‘s advanced material achieved a Flame Spread Rating of not greater than 25 and a Smoke Developed Classification of not greater than 50.
Comparable Noise Attenuation
In real world sound tests performed on constructed buildings, System XFR® DWV systems have proven to offer comparable noise attenuation in relation to cast iron from drainage flow.

Plenum-Rated PVC Pipes
Your standard PVC pipes will not be plenum rated due to potential for high smoke production and creation of toxic fumes. You need a specially engineered PVC product such as System XFR to meet plenum ratings and reduce fire risk. XFR is ideal for noncombustible applications, this system meets National and Provincial building code requirements:
- Certified to CSA B181.2
- High buildings as defined by NBC article 3.2.6
- Air plenums as defined by NBC article 3.6.4.3
- Noncombustible construction as defined by NBC article 3.1.5
- Penetrating a rated fire separation as defined by NBC article 3.1.9.4.(4)
- High impact strength in cold temperatures. Impact-tested at 0 ºC and 23 ºC, XFR is tough enough to exceed the CSA requirements.
Side Inlet Tees for Side Inlet Tees
IPEX’s side inlet tees are compact fittings designed to pick up a water closet and one or two branches. The inlets are available in left-hand, right-hand, and double configurations, providing greater flexibility and convenience for contractors. The double side inlet tee configuration allows multiple horizontal DWV connections through a single fitting, further enhancing installation efficiency.

What’s the Difference Between System 15 and XFR?
System 15 and System XFR are both PVC piping systems, but they are designed for different applications and have different safety ratings:
System XFR has both a fire rating and a low smoke development rating. This allows it to be installed in air plenums (spaces used for air circulation in heating and air conditioning systems).
System 15 has a fire rating but lacks the necessary smoke rating to be used in plenums. It is generally a less expensive option for standard DWV applications where a plenum rating is not required.
